Welcome to Victoria: A Perfect Blend of Charm, Culture, and Nature

From the moment we arrived in Victoria, we were completely enchanted by the city’s unique blend of historic architecture, lush gardens, and vibrant cultural scene. This coastal gem, nestled on Vancouver Island, is as welcoming as it is beautiful—whether you’re here for the first time or revisiting, Victoria promises a getaway full of surprises and delights.

Victoria has a way of sweeping you off your feet—its temperate climate, lush greenery, and the ever-present sea breeze make it an ideal year-round destination. And then, of course, there’s the history—Victoria is Canada’s second-oldest city, and its architecture feels like a living museum, with charming buildings that evoke a bygone era. Whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, or food enthusiast, there’s something here for everyone, and that’s exactly what we loved about it.

With its picture-perfect harbor, Butchart Gardens, and the buzzing Inner Harbour, there’s no shortage of beauty. Our time here was filled with a mix of adventure, relaxation, and a good dose of local culture. If you’re planning your own trip to this enchanting city, here’s everything you need to know to make the most of it.

Getting Here: Multiple Routes, One Incredible Journey

We found that there are several convenient ways to reach Victoria, each offering its own unique experience. Here’s a breakdown of our favorite options:

By Ferry: Scenic and Serene

Our journey to Victoria began with the BC Ferries ride from Vancouver to Vancouver Island, and it was an experience in itself. The ferry ride took about 1.5 hours and was one of the most scenic routes we’ve ever taken. As the boat sailed across the sparkling waters of the Gulf Islands, we could see tiny islets dotting the horizon, lush green forests in the distance, and the distant outline of the island’s rugged coastline.

BC_Ferries

The ferry terminals in both Vancouver and Victoria are well-equipped with amenities, including food courts, coffee shops, and plenty of room to relax. We made sure to head to the outdoor viewing decks to take in the fresh air and incredible scenery as the ferry gently cruised toward Vancouver Island. We highly recommend keeping an eye on the ferry schedule and booking reservations in advance—especially during the busy summer months, as ferries can fill up quickly.

For those wanting to maximize the view, be sure to take a seat outdoors. Watching the ferry glide through the open water, with seagulls diving and small islands passing by, is one of those small but magical moments that made our journey extra memorable.

By Plane: Quick and Easy

Victoria-International-Airport

If you’re pressed for time or just want to get to Victoria faster, Victoria International Airport (YYJ) is the quickest way to get here. The airport offers direct flights from several major cities, including Vancouver, Calgary, and Seattle, making it easy to find a flight that fits your schedule. The flight from Vancouver takes just about 30 minutes, which meant we were able to start exploring right away.

The airport is located about 30 minutes from downtown Victoria, and we found taxis, shuttles, and rental cars readily available to take us into the city. The drive is incredibly scenic, winding through lush forests and past waterfronts, giving us a taste of the natural beauty that awaited us in the heart of the city.

By Seaplane: An Unforgettable Aerial Experience

If you’re looking for something truly unique, we highly recommend flying into Victoria via seaplane. We chose to fly with Harbour Air, and it was, without a doubt, one of the most exciting experiences of our trip. The scenic flight from Vancouver to Victoria took just about 35 minutes, but those 35 minutes were filled with awe-inspiring views. As we soared over the coastline, we could see the jagged cliffs, endless forests, and sparkling bays stretching out below us. The aerial perspective of Vancouver Island was absolutely breathtaking, and we felt like we were floating on top of the world.

The seaplane landed right in downtown Victoria, at the Inner Harbour, giving us an immediate front-row seat to the city’s scenic beauty. This seamless, picturesque arrival made the trip feel even more special, and we would highly recommend it for anyone looking to add an unforgettable touch to their adventure.

By Bus: A Comfortable and Scenic Ride

Harbour Air Seaplane
Pacific Coach Lines

For those looking for an economical and comfortable travel option, taking the bus is a great choice. We decided to try Pacific Coach Lines, which offers a combination of bus and ferry services from Vancouver to Victoria. The journey is incredibly scenic, with stunning coastal views as you cross the water on the ferry.

The bus ride itself was smooth and easy, and the combination of the ferry and coach transport made for a relaxed and stress-free way to reach the city. Once in Victoria, we found the city’s public transportation system to be efficient, with frequent buses connecting key attractions and neighborhoods, making it easy to explore the city at your own pace.

What to Expect Upon Arrival: Victoria’s Warm Welcome

After arriving in Victoria, it didn’t take long for us to feel at home. The city’s relaxed vibe, friendly locals, and incredible surroundings made us feel immediately welcomed.

We began our exploration in the Inner Harbour, where we were captivated by the iconic Fairmont Empress Hotel and the British Columbia Parliament Buildings. The harbor is the beating heart of Victoria, where the historic buildings meet a bustling waterfront filled with boats, kayaks, and seaplanes. We spent hours wandering along the water’s edge, taking in the stunning views of the harbor, and occasionally stopping to enjoy the street performances and local art on display.

Victoria’s pedestrian-friendly streets and public transit options made it easy to explore the city’s historic districts and vibrant neighborhoods. We loved walking around the James Bay area, known for its Victorian homes and proximity to the Inner Harbour, as well as the charming Legislative Grounds that surround the Parliament Buildings.

Tips for Your Trip: A Few Things We Learned Along the Way

VBC_Weather

Weather:  Victoria is known for its mild climate, but we quickly learned that it’s best to be prepared for rain, especially in the winter months. Dressing in layers is key, as the temperature can vary throughout the day. Spring and summer are definitely the best times to visit, offering pleasant weather and gorgeous gardens in full bloom. Fall brings stunning foliage, making it another great time to visit, though it’s wise to pack an umbrella just in case!

VBC_Transportation

Getting Around:  Victoria is a walkable city, which is perfect for exploring its charming neighborhoods and scenic streets on foot. However, we also took advantage of the public transit system, which is efficient and easy to use, especially if you’re heading out to more distant areas like Horne Lake Caves or the nearby Butchart Gardens. If you’re more inclined to pedal, bike rentals are widely available and offer a fun way to explore the city’s beautiful waterfront and parks. We also used ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft, which were convenient for getting around when we didn’t feel like walking or taking public transit.

Local Etiquette:  What we really appreciated about Victoria was the friendly, welcoming atmosphere. The locals are kind and easy-going, and a simple “hello” or “thank you” goes a long way. When dining or using services, tipping around 15-20% is standard. While exploring the city’s natural spaces, we were reminded to respect nature and follow posted guidelines, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Whether you’re in the heart of downtown or hiking through Gordon Head, it’s important to be mindful of your surroundings and the environment.

Victoria: A City That Captures Your Heart

As we discovered, Victoria is a place that makes an impression the moment you arrive. Whether you’re wandering through Butchart Gardens, soaking up the history at the Royal BC Museum, or simply enjoying the city’s charming atmosphere, there’s no shortage of things to see and do.

From the stunning coastal scenery to the warmth of the locals, Victoria is a place that beckons visitors to slow down, breathe deeply, and appreciate the beauty and tranquility around them. We’re already planning our next trip back!

Must-See Attractions

1. Butchart Gardens: A Living Masterpiece

Butchart Gardens is, without a doubt, one of the most breathtaking places we visited during our time in Victoria. As we wandered through the 55 acres of meticulously curated gardens, we were constantly struck by the sheer variety and beauty of the landscapes that unfolded around us. Established in 1904 by Jennie Butchart, the gardens have become a National Historic Site of Canada, and it’s easy to see why. Every corner we turned offered something new and stunning, from lush floral displays to tranquil ponds and winding pathways.

The Sunken Garden was a highlight of our visit. Descending into this lower-level garden felt almost like stepping into a hidden world, where vibrant colors exploded from every corner—blossoms of every hue and shape, beautifully arranged in intricate patterns. We couldn’t help but marvel at how the garden evolved with the seasons, from bright spring tulips to the warm tones of autumn chrysanthemums.

The Japanese Garden offered an entirely different experience—more peaceful and serene, with koi ponds reflecting the sky, delicate bridges crossing calm waters, and the scent of jasmine in the air. This section of the garden had a tranquility that was almost meditative, and we found ourselves spending longer than expected, simply sitting and taking in the beauty of the space.

Another highlight was the opportunity to experience the Evening Illumination during the summer months. When the sun set, the gardens took on an enchanting quality as the trees, pathways, and flowers were softly lit, casting a magical glow that made the whole experience feel dreamlike.

We also highly recommend enjoying a meal at the on-site dining options, where you can indulge in delicious, local, seasonal cuisine while overlooking the gardens. Whether you’re enjoying a leisurely lunch or a special dinner, the setting makes it a memorable experience that perfectly complements the beauty of Butchart Gardens.

2. Royal BC Museum: A Journey Through Time

Our visit to the Royal BC Museum was nothing short of captivating. As one of Canada’s top cultural institutions, it offers an in-depth look at the natural and cultural history of British Columbia—and we could have easily spent an entire day exploring its many exhibits. The First Peoples’ Gallery was particularly moving, with its fascinating collection of indigenous artifacts and artwork that offer a deep and respectful insight into the region’s rich indigenous cultures. We learned about the traditions, craftsmanship, and history of the First Nations people, which was both humbling and educational.

The Natural History Gallery was another highlight, especially the impressive dinosaur skeletons, which sparked our inner paleontologists. Seeing life-sized models of animals native to the area—such as grizzly bears, bald eagles, and whales—was both awe-inspiring and educational. The way the exhibits brought the ecosystems of British Columbia to life was so immersive that we almost felt transported to the regions they represented, from the forested rainforests to the rocky coastline.

One of the best parts of the museum is its IMAX theatre, which offers a completely different experience, showing nature and documentary films that tie in perfectly with the museum’s exhibits. We caught a stunning film about the coastal waters of BC, which allowed us to dive deeper into the natural beauty we had just witnessed in the galleries.

The museum’s layout and well-curated collections ensure that you’re constantly discovering something new—whether it’s an ancient artifact, a unique animal specimen, or a moving story of the region’s history.

3. Beacon Hill Park: A Tranquil Urban Escape

Beacon Hill Park is a place we returned to multiple times during our stay in Victoria. Tucked away just steps from the city’s vibrant downtown, this sprawling urban oasis offered us a peaceful escape into nature. Covering over 200 acres, the park features lush gardens, walking trails, and panoramic ocean views that are perfect for a leisurely stroll or a relaxing afternoon.

We spent a significant amount of time exploring the renowned rose garden, where we were surrounded by the intoxicating fragrance of hundreds of varieties in full bloom. It was an utterly serene experience—flowers in vibrant colors, bees buzzing gently from bloom to bloom, and the occasional flutter of butterflies. There was also the waterfront path where we enjoyed a peaceful walk along the water, watching sailboats drift by and taking in the views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

One of the park’s most delightful surprises was the Beacon Hill Children’s Farm, where we had the chance to interact with friendly farm animals like goats, pigs, and chickens. It’s the perfect spot for families to spend some time together, but we also found it charming and fun, regardless of age. The Beacon Hill Monument stands tall at the park’s highest point, providing a sweeping view of the area, and we paused here to admire the landscape before heading back to the park’s other attractions.

If you’re visiting during the summer, don’t miss out on the many festivals and events held throughout the year, which add an extra layer of vibrancy to the park’s already lively atmosphere.

4. Inner Harbour: The Heart of Victoria

The Inner Harbour is undoubtedly the heart and soul of Victoria, and we found ourselves returning to this central location again and again during our stay. Whether we were wandering along the waterfront, snapping photos of the iconic Fairmont Empress Hotel, or simply sitting on a bench and watching the world go by, the harbor’s charm was undeniable. The towering Parliament Buildings provide a striking backdrop, their neo-baroque architecture adding to the historic character of the harbor.

We loved how the Inner Harbour felt like a lively hub of activity, with a mix of tourists and locals enjoying the scenery. There are always street performers, artists, and musicians adding to the vibrant atmosphere, making it a fun place to relax and soak up the local culture. The view of the boats, kayaks, and sailboats gliding across the water is simply mesmerizing.

For something truly special, we highly recommend booking a whale-watching tour that departs right from the harbor. It’s an unforgettable experience to see orcas and humpback whales in their natural habitat, and the tour provides a completely different perspective of the harbor and coastline.

5. Craigdarroch Castle: Stepping Back in Time

Craigdarroch Castle was like stepping into a time machine that transported us back to the grandeur of the Victorian era. Built by coal baron Robert Dunsmuir in the late 1800s, this mansion is an architectural masterpiece. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by its intricate woodwork, stunning stained-glass windows, and luxurious furnishings that tell the story of a wealthy family from a bygone era.

We took a guided tour through the castle, where we learned fascinating tidbits about the Dunsmuir family and the history of Victoria’s coal industry. Each room had its own unique story—whether it was the grand ballroom, the cozy library, or the elegant drawing room. The tour also took us to the castle tower, where we were rewarded with breathtaking views of the city and surrounding area. The panoramic vista from the top of the tower was worth the climb, and we spent some time just taking in the stunning sights.

Even if you’re not particularly interested in history or architecture, Craigdarroch Castle offers an immersive experience that brings you closer to the history of Victoria and the people who shaped it. The temporary exhibitions held throughout the year provide a nice variation to the traditional experience, offering something new with every visit.

The best part? The central location. We were able to step outside and immediately be surrounded by Victoria’s vibrant shopping districts, incredible restaurants, and must-see attractions. One of our favorite experiences was enjoying dinner on the Vista 18 rooftop restaurant, where we savored delicious cuisine while taking in the sweeping panoramic views of the harbor below. It’s an absolute must-do experience when you’re here—the delicate scones, finger sandwiches, and pastries were paired with the finest selection of teas, making it feel like a quintessential Victoria experience. Beyond the tea, we were also impressed by the luxurious amenities, including the on-site spa and a lovely pool where we could unwind after a day of sightseeing. The caves themselves were absolutely breathtaking. We were in awe of the stalactites and stalagmites that seemed to have grown over thousands of years, creating an almost magical atmosphere. Every corner of the cave revealed something new—from shimmering crystal formations to hidden passageways. Some of the more challenging spelunking tours even involved crawling through narrow tunnels, which added an element of adventure and excitement. It was thrilling to see just how much of the cave system was still unexplored, and we felt like true explorers as we ventured through the twisting passageways.

The Juan de Fuca Trail was, without a doubt, one of the highlights of our trip to Victoria. We had read that it was a trail for the truly adventurous, so we geared up and set out on an overnight adventure to explore its beauty. The trail can be completed in segments or over several days, depending on your hiking style and fitness level, but we opted for a shorter section for a day trip and felt completely immersed in the natural wonders along the way.

The trailhead at China Beach was easy to access, about an hour’s drive from downtown Victoria. From there, we descended into lush rainforests, surrounded by towering trees and the sounds of birds and streams. The terrain was varied, from well-maintained paths to more rugged sections that required a little climbing over roots and rocks. The effort was well worth it. Along the way, we were treated to stunning views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, with the Olympic Mountains of Washington State rising in the distance.

One of the most striking aspects of the trail is the incredible variety of ecosystems it passes through. We hiked through moss-covered forests, across wild, untamed beaches, and even past tide pools teeming with marine life. The Botanical Beach area, where the trail ends, was absolutely mesmerizing. As we carefully explored the tidal pools, we could see starfish, crabs, and small fish darting among the rocks—a nature lover’s dream come true.

Trail Highlights: What You Can't Miss

China Beach: The perfect place to start your adventure. The beach is calm and beautiful, with plenty of space for a picnic or a swim before hitting the trail.

Sombrio Beach: Known for its beautiful waterfalls, this beach is a favorite for photographers and nature lovers. We took a short detour to the waterfall and were amazed by its pristine beauty, cascading down into the rocky beach.

Port Renfrew: This small coastal village marks the end of the trail, and it’s an ideal spot to relax and refresh after a long hike. We stopped here for a well-deserved meal at one of the local seafood joints, enjoying fish tacos and a cold drink with a view of the harbor.

Botanical Beach: The trail’s crowning jewel. The rock formations and tide pools here are filled with an abundance of marine life, making it a fantastic place to explore or simply sit back and enjoy the ocean.

A Hiker’s Paradise: What to Expect

The Juan de Fuca Trail is not just about the stunning ocean views—it’s an adventure that takes you through old-growth forests, across wild beaches, and along some of the most rugged coastlines you’ll find in the Pacific Northwest. While the trail is moderately challenging, we found it manageable for all skill levels, as long as you’re prepared for some rough patches. The trail has options for both seasoned hikers and casual adventurers who just want to take in some of the incredible scenery.

We recommend bringing sturdy hiking boots, a rain jacket, and plenty of water—the weather can change quickly on the island, and even a sunny day can turn into a misty adventure. There are campsites along the way for multi-day trekkers, but if you’re only doing a day hike, there are plenty of shorter sections to enjoy without committing to the full trail.

Why You Should Go: The Juan de Fuca Trail Offers More Than Just a Hike

This isn’t your typical garden stroll or urban walk. The Juan de Fuca Trail offers an immersive experience in nature that allows you to disconnect and reconnect with the wilderness. There’s something truly magical about hiking along the cliffs and feeling the wind from the ocean brush across your face as you take in breathtaking views. It’s the kind of adventure that makes you feel like you’re discovering something extraordinary, even though it’s right at the doorstep of the city.

If you love the outdoors and are looking for a physical challenge with equally rewarding views, this trail will captivate your spirit and leave you with memories of wild beaches, forested pathways, and ocean views that seem to go on forever.
