Golden Ears Deck is done

golden-ears-deckThe $808-million Golden Ears Bridge is expected to open in June, connecting Langley and Surrey to Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. The one kilometer span has three lanes in each direction and will be free for the first month, then, once you are hooked, they will start charging $2.85 per trip for drivers with a transponder (plus $1 a month rental) or a $4 bill will be mailed out to those who don’t. Perhaps Translink can set up a PayPal account. I don’t know.

In any case, the new bridge will save considerable time and gas for those who have to commute to the other side.  It will also provide a new place for engineering students to try and hang the VW bug,  BASE jumpers are sizing it up and somewhere there is a teenager ready to tag it.

Of course the new bridge also spells the end of the mythical Albion Ferry, which like a drive-in-theatre, everyone should go once just to say you did it.

The new crossing is also expected to bring increased value to home prices in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge.
