Getting to Vancouver: Planes, Trains and Automobiles
There are many modes of transportation that can get you to the city of Vancouver, such as airplanes, trains, cruise ships, buses and ferries. It is very easy to get to Vancouver, whether you are coming from another province, state or country. Here's some transportation information to help you get yourself to Vancouver!
By Train
If you want to travel into Vancouver by train you can travel on VIA Rail Canada, which arrives at 1150 Station Street in Vancouver. United States, International travelers and Canadians can buy a two-country 30-day Railpass that takes travelers across North America and connects them to rail connections that continue on to Vancouver. Travelers can also take Amtrak from the southernmost tip of the West Coast to Vancouver with stops throughout all of the cities on the west coast of the United States. The western transcontinental train called ‘The Canadian' also travels through from Toronto, Jasper, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and on to Vancouver.
By Car
Visitors can take the Trans-Canada Highway (1), which is a freeway with limited access that runs along the east side of the city of Vancouver. The freeway eventually crosses the Second Narrows Bridge that travels to North Vancouver. If you are traveling along Highway 1 from the east side you can get off at the Cassiar Street Exit and turn left at the first light. This will lead you to Highway 7A, which is also known as Hastings Street. Hastings Street will lead you into the core of the city and should take about 20 minutes. If you are coming from the north then you can follow a sign that says “Bridge to Vancouver/Exit 13,” which will take you across the scenic Lions Gate Bridge.
If you're coming from Seattle by car it only takes around two and a half hours and once you cross the Peace Arch Bridge on US Interstate 5, it then becomes Highway 99. Visitors will enjoy the scenic drive through Delta, White Rock, and along the Fraser River. The highway ends there when you cross over the Oak Street Bridge and turns into Oak Street that will lead you to downtown Vancouver.
By Airplane
If you're travelng within Canada, there are only a few options for flights. WestJet and Air Canada are your best bets for traveling to Vancouver. They operate flights from all major cities in Canada.
Vancouver is easily accessible by many major airlines. YVR, known as Vancouver International Airport, is the second-busiest hub airport in Canada. It operates 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. It is a scenic airport that is both clean and artistic. It boasts Native art all over the airport and great souvenirs for tourists. There are direct daily flights from major United States cities offered by Continental Airlines, American Airlines, Northwest Airlines, United Airlines, Air Canada and more. These major carriers that provide direct flights cover Denver, Dallas, New York, San Francisco, Phoenix and 33 other North American cities, as well as 3 cities in Europe and 12 cities in Asia.

By Ferry or Cruise Ship
The Port of Vancouver welcomes cruise ships from across the globe on a weekly basis. Visitors can see the ships come into the Port of Vancouver or depart from a famous city landmark called Canada Place. Each ship traveling the Vancouver-to-Alaska route carries over one million passengers in total to Vancouver every year. Holland America, Norwegian Cruises, Carnival Cruises, Royal Caribbean, Crystal Cruises and Princess Cruises dock at the Port of Vancouver thousands of times throughout the year. Visitors arriving by cruise ship can catch a taxi at the pier as soon as they get off the ship or walk to the nearby city hotels and public transportation.
If you are coming into Vancouver from Victoria by ferry you can catch a ride with BC Ferries, which has three routes daily. BC Ferries takes care of the short travel between Vancouver Island and Tsawwassen, as well as the Gulf Islands and Sunshine Coast. By Bus
If you want to travel into Vancouver by bus, Greyhound Bus Lines has a great service to get you into the heart of the city. This bus service travels between many of the major cities in Canada and from Seattle to Vancouver. Pacific Coach Lines provides a great service and package deals to travel from downtown Vancouver over to downtown Victoria. Travelers can also purchase a Discovery Pass, which gives visitors unlimited bus travel throughout Canada and the United States.
