BC Lions

The BC Lions are based in the city of Vancouver and are members of the Canadian Football League.  All of their home games are now held downtown at BC Place Stadium, but before this the BC Lions used to play at the old Empire Stadium located in East Vancouver. They have played in the Canadian Football League since the year of 1954 and they have won the Grey Cup Championship 5 times, with the latest win coming in the year 2006. The team was named after two mountains situated in North Vancouver that are called The Lions and are thought to protect the city from harm. They acquired this name in 1953 and have kept it to this day. The BC Lions first winning game was against the Calgary Stampeders in 1954 and apparently you could hear the football fans celebrating far into the night.

In 1959, the BC Lions made their first appearance in the playoffs with a win over the Calgary Stampeders, but lost to the Edmonton Eskimos in the finals.  The Lions have made many appearances in the playoffs since then, won a few Grey Cups, and are now perennial Western Conference championship favourites. Some great places to catch these games are at Earl’s on Top, 72 Sports Bar, Checker’s Bar and Grill and at the Cactus Club restaurants around the city. The BC Lions season is from the month of June to October every year. Check out their website at www.bclions.com for schedules and information.
