Uva Makes a Beautiful Mouth

Uva means grape in Italian, but in that language of love it does something beautiful to your mouth. Try it. You will look like an Italian supermodel blowing kisses to the camera in Capri. And that is exactly how you will feel sitting in the sleek Uva Wine Bar (http://uvawinebar.ca/) sipping on a glass of the grape’s finest product.

Sexy white vinyl chairs hug low tables in large windows while coloured lights bathe the whole room in urban chic. The room transforms from a sophisticated and quiet (ish) retreat in the evening to a packed, standing-room only party at night without ever losing its cool. In fact, the whole block has been transformed into an oasis of cool starting with the Moda Hotel (http://www.modahotel.ca/) (of which Uva is a part), Cibo Trattoria and Viti, the wine and lager store. They make an excllent team and I’ve patronized every quarter with simply exceptional experiences all around.

The times I’ve been to Uva, I’ve dabbled in the New World Whites by the glass. I’ve had the Saint Clair (http://www.saintclair.co.nz/) Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough from New Zealand ($49 for a bottle, $10 for a glass) which is light and crisp and tastes somewhat sharply of apples and which I love dearly, and also the Woo Woo Gewurtztraminer ($9) from B.C.’s Dirty Laundry (http://www.dirtylaundry.ca/) (a long time favorite chosen for the

fabulous name and kept for the taste). Next time I will make a bit more of an effort to get through their

extensive wine list, although I’ll have to find a date to help me finance some of the old world reds.

As for food, like most wine bars there is a mix and match cheese, condiment and charcuterie selection that I will try once I get past the bruschetta (ingredients and prices change) and stuffed zucchini blossoms (ordered from Cibo for $17). Heavenly. It makes my mouth feel beautiful.
