Interactive Fun with the Boil

Every Thursday from 5pm onwards, Pier 7 Restaurant + Bar features the BOIL, an interactive shared experience for two people to enjoy and get a bit messy. Tie your seafood bib on and get ready to dive into some fabulous seafood treats! Chef Mikoda’s inspiration for this signature dish was the idea of “fun for two.” This dish is $25 per person and includes clams, mussels, potatoes, grilled corn cobs, Snow crab, prawns, chorizo sausage and Dungeness crab. (See your tools for this fun dish below and be prepared to get messy. The good kind of messy!)

Three Highlights That Make This Restaurant Unique

  • Phenomenal views. See all of Vancouver from your table and take in stunning sunsets and ocean views.

  • BOIL Menu. Every Thursday, guests can enjoy some of the best seafood from the sea. From snow crab and prawns to chorizo sausage and grilled corn cobs, enjoy this tasty interactive dish for two and get a little messy!

  • Lunch45 Menu. A menu that will have you in and out in 45 minutes or less. Perfect for a quick bite on a work day or before an afternoon movie.

Our Personal Dining Experience

Upon arriving at Pier 7 Restaurant + Bar, we were greeted by a very warm and friendly staff. The restaurant was just a short 5 minute walk from the Lonsdale Quay Market area and it has one of the best oceanfront locations on the North Shore. We were blown away by the stunning views this restaurant offers from its historic shipyard locale. We were given a table right beside the window looking out which is always a bonus. Most of the tables in the restaurant offer phenomenal views so you never really lose out.

The General Manager, Jeremy Atkins, came to say hi when we arrived and kept checking on us throughout our meal. It was so refreshing to see a general manager getting so involved with the floor staff and helping out with delivering dishes and genuine hospitality to guests. You don’t always see that, but when you do see such teamwork coming from all levels, you know you are dining in a well-run establishment.

As we looked over the dinner menu, we noticed that there is a nice balance between seafood and seasonal dishes, and there is a menu item to satisfy every type of craving. From Salt Spring Island Mussels and a Roasted Beet Salad, to the West Coast Bouillabaisse and Pan Seared Diver Scallops, this venue has it all. We ordered some drinks to get started on our dining adventure and two appetizers which were both tasty and unique. We tried the Grilled Soft Tacos with beer braised chicken, black beans and guacamole and the Truffle Frites with rosemary, truffle oil and parmesan. The soft tacos fit the bill for a light shared snack and the Truffle Frites were so tasty with the sweet truffle oil that we only wanted more. They came with dipping sauces, but they didn’t really need them as the fries alone were delicious. I have never had fries like this before so it was a great start to the meal.

Our server (I wish I could remember her name!) was an absolute delight and very helpful when it came to describing the dishes. She sold us on the BOIL, so we ordered it for our main course. The idea of the BOIL is to bring fun to the table and to create an interactive dining experience for two people. We were given bibs to protect our clothing, but we decided to be brave and take the risk.

The Snow crab was fresh and so tasty once dipped in garlic butter.  The BOIL was definitely a shared interactive experience as we cracked, hammered and stabbed away at our meal, and it was a lot of fun. Being “allowed” to get messy in a social environment is a winning experience in my books.  The BOIL was very filling for us. I especially enjoyed the crab, chorizo sausage and mussels in the dish and I hope to return again soon to enjoy more menu items that caught my eye.

To add something sweet to the end of our meal, we moved onto dessert. Even though we were pretty full from the appetizers and BOIL, we wanted to end our dining experience with absolute decadence. I ordered the Coconut Pana Cotta with candied ginger and passion fruit and Shaun ordered the New York Style Cheesecake with brulee, white peach coulis and fruit compote.

As I was eating mine, the words ‘refreshing and tangy’ kept coming to mind. Sprinkled with candied ginger and fresh coconut, my creamy Coconut Pana Cotta was an excellent ending to my meal. If you like desserts with a kick, this is the dish to try!

I tried the New York Cheesecake as well and it was absolutely impressive. Many restaurants can’t get cheesecake right, believe me! So this was a nice surprise. My husband Shaun was extremely happy with it and I think he almost licked the plate. (Sorry Shaun, people have a right to know just how yummy it was!)

My Final Thoughts

Fresh seafood, fantastic service and phenomenal views of the city skyline. What more could you ask for when dining out in the city?! Pier 7 Restaurant + Bar is the perfect place to go with friends, family or for that first or second date. It offers a friendly and warm environment for guests to dine and sample scrumptious West Coast-inspired cuisine and it is definitely a venue that we will return to, for the Thursday signature BOIL and more!
