Local Film/TV Scene…

You usually can’t drive around this beautiful city and not pass a film set. Vancouver, aka “Hollywood North” is ranked third in North America for film and television productions. According to the BC Film Commission…”More than 200 motion picture projects were shot here in 2006 generating in excess of a billion dollars in production spending.” Unfortunately, this year has proven to be a tough one for the local film industry. With the strong Canadian dollar, the writers’ strike and then the pending SAG strike, Vancouver really felt the hit. But August has showed that things are slowing picking up.

Feature film projects currently underway are:
*Cats & Dogs 2 and Scooby Doo 3.
*Funny men Ben Stiller & Owen Wilson are in town filming Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian.
Plot: “The centerpiece of the film will be bringing to life the Smithsonian Institution, which houses the world’s largest museum complex with more than 136 million items in its collections, ranging from the plane Amelia Earhart flew on her nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic and Al Capone’s rap sheet and mug shot to Dorothy’s ruby red slippers and Archie Bunker’s lounge chair.”
*John Cusak & Amanda Peet are co-starring in Farewell Atlantis aka 2012.
Plot: “With the Mayan calendar ending in 2012, a large group of people must deal with natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, typhoons and glaciers.”
*The Tooth Fairy starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will start filming Sept. 15th.
Plot: “A family comedy. Tess is a 6-years-old girl who is very disappointed when Derek (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) tells her that the tooth fairy isn’t real.”
TV series in production include:
*The Guard & Reaper (both in the second seasons)
*Eureka & Psych (both in their third seasons)
*Battlestar Galactica and Supernatural (both in their fourth seasons)
*Stargate Atlantis (Season 5)
*The L Word (Season 6)
…and the long running popular series Smallville, in it’s 8th Season.
