The Basics

If you are seeking the perfect place for your family to spend quality time together outdoors, Capilano Bridge in North Vancouver, British Columbia is the place to go! It has all the adventure you need to keep the entire family entertained for a morning or afternoon.  Aside from the famous suspension bridge guests can enjoy phenomenal sky high experiences such as the Treetops Adventure, Cliffwalk and the Canyon Lookout.

There is also plenty of activities designed for kids such as the Rainforest Explorer’s Program, the Treetops Adventures’ treehouse pit-stop, birds of prey at Raptors Ridge and a wide variety of yummy fudge to sample! This famous Vancouver attraction has been dazzling tourists since its first crossings in 1889 and if you have a great passion for the great outdoors, you should definitely add this destination to your must-see travel ‘to-do’ list.

If you are in need of a bite to eat while visiting the Capilano Suspension Bridge, check out the Bridge House Restaurant located directly across the street. Guests can enjoy an array of carefully selected BC wines and tasty light dishes in the warmer months and warm soups and hot culinary delights during the colder months. This seasonal restaurant is open for afternoon tea, lunch and early dinners and there are kid-friendly options as well.

If you are in the mood for a little shopping while at the park, make sure you stop by the famous Trading Post where you can buy all sorts of jewelry, First Nations designs, outerwear, accessories, stuffed toys, leather items and more. There is even a wide selection of fudge, maple syrups and Roger’s chocolates for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Don’t miss out on the Canyon Lights event that will run from Saturday, November 30th to Saturday, January 4th where families can see thousands of bright lights, decorate gingerbread cookies, enjoy seasonal music, get involved in some glass ornament blowing and more!

Our Family Experience at Capilano Suspension Bridge

We were very happy with our family day at Capilano Suspension Bridge and always enjoy the first moment we step onto the bridge. Along with a bit of a rush and thrill, the bridge offers some amazing views so we made sure we brought our camera with us. As it is only a short 10 to 20 minute drive from downtown, this family-friendly attraction is perfect for a day of fun outdoors where you can enjoy quality time with loved ones.

The bridge is approximately 230 feet high and stretches at 450 feet long. When we crossed the bridge it was a bit wobbly because so many people were on it, but not to worry, it is completely safe.  Jumping, running and doing anything silly while on the bridge is forbidden and you cannot take wheelchairs and strollers onto the bridge. You can leave your strollers by the Bridge Safety Station. You can view the newest addition, Cliffwalk from the bridge, which is a cantilevered walkway that clings to the granite cliff high above Capilano Canyon.

We all enjoyed the TreeTops Adventure which provides non-stop bridge fun for all ages. We started at the main Treehouse and then continued onto seven different mini-suspension bridges that gave us a chance to see some of the best views of the Capilano River.

After crossing the bridge and experiencing the exciting Treetops Adventure, we walked over to try out the Cliffwalk. This might be a bit nerve-wracking for some young kids, depending on their fear of heights and small walking paths. The five of us challenged ourselves on the Cliffwalk and enjoyed the thrill of being so high above the bustling river below. This is definitely an attraction that should be taken with care and no running is allowed, so watch your kids at all times and make sure you take plenty of pictures. Bring your camera as there are some amazing panoramic photo opportunities on Cliff Walk!

If you want to hear all about the history of the park and some secret tidbits of information you may miss out on, you can also ask for a complimentary guided tour while you are there. We didn’t take the tour, but enjoyed everything just as much as the next person. The kids got involved in the Kids Explorer Program where they collected stamps from around the park and obtained a certificate of excellent.

We already had lunch, but if your family gets hungry while at the park check out the Canyon Café for fresh sandwiches and soups and the Logger’s Grill for scrumptious burgers, hot dogs and other snacks. If you want to be indoors in more of a fine dining atmosphere, visit the Bridge House Restaurant across the street from the park.

My Final Thoughts

I have been wanting to visit and review the Capilano Suspension Bridge again for quite some time now and our family was really happy with our visit.  You may have to drive a bit further out of Vancouver to reach the breathtaking North Shore, but it is truly worth the time. If you want to perfect outdoor family fun day and if you want to spend some quality time together, Capilano Bridge is the perfect choice.

Escape the daily grind and boring weekend routines and get outside with your family. There is nothing like taking in sky high views of the gorgeous Capilano River below, seeing birds of prey at Raptors Ridge, touching ancient trees and spending quality time as a family at one of the most famous attractions in British Columbia.

* A special thank you to Stacy Chala and Helen Hall in the Sales and Marketing Department for arranging this visit and making it a fun-filled day for our family.
