Echo Valley Ranch and Spa

One of the best escapes from busy city life is Echo Valley Ranch and Spa in Clinton, a 4.5-hour drive from Vancouver or a mere hour by air. The ranch spans over 160 glorious acres and is home to an exceptional Thai spa as well as a world class chef who prepares three healthy, wholesome (and tasty) meals every day. Visitors may opt to spend the entire day out of doors, enjoying adventures like horseback riding through Echo Valley, river rafting, fly fishing or hiking. Hit the spa next for some sensational pampering or enjoy a hot tub on the deck which overlooks the valley and has the best view of the bright, starlit sky. Business retreats, romantic getaways,

family reunions and even weddings are all popular reasons for visits to Echo Valley Ranch, which provides the means of seeing the great Canadian wilderness in optimum comfort. City slickers get to give their cell phones a rest while enjoying comfortable cabin or log home living, but still have access to the latest in fun in the game and entertainment rooms.

Claudette Carracedo Photo -61Who: Jeff Christie
Home: Born in Vancouver, BC and currently residing in Calgary, Alberta
Sport: Luge

Canada’s Jeff Christie has been luging for 14 years and competing on a national level for the past nine. After a fast-paced season in 2006–07, Christie was selected by the world’s elite luge athletes to represent them on the International Luge Federation (FIL) Sport Commission. Christie’s first trip to the Olympic Winter Games was in 2006, and he completed the World Cup season with four top-ten finishes in eight races, including a sixth-place finish on his home track in Calgary. Christie now has his sights set on becoming the first Canadian luge athlete to win a medal at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. When Christie is off the luge track, he is working to complete his degree in business from the University of Calgary. He took time from his busy schedule training for the winter Olympics and studying to answer a few questions.

VancouverBC.com: How did you get into one of the most exciting and dangerous winter Olympic sports?
Jeff Christie: “I went to a summer sports camp at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary (COP) when I was 11 years old. COP is where the Olympic Track for the 1988 Olympics is and so luge was one of the sports I tried. I loved it enough that I joined the luge program that fall and have been sliding ever since. And it’s not dangerous…downhill skiing, now that is dangerous!”

VBC: What are you doing in the final months to get ready for 2010?
JC: “I am currently in Whistler to start our sliding season and we are here off and on training until the Olympics. We also have been training in the gym since April; however, that is normal for us every year.”

Claudette Carracedo Photo -59VBC: As the Olympics near, how are your feelings changing? Are you getting more excited or nervous or a bit of both?
JC: “My feelings are the same as they have always been—I am excited for the Games. Especially because they are in Canada, but I know that it is just another race and I have to perform to my best no matter what.”

VBC: How do you feel about your event being hosted in Whistler and so close to your birthplace?
JC: “I think that having my event in Whistler is going to be amazing. This town is meant for big events and I have no doubt that it is going to absolutely shine during the Olympics. The people here are amazing, and people make the Games what they are.”

VBC: What is your favourite place in the world to compete?
JC:
“Konigssee in Germany. It is the oldest artificial track in the world and always has a huge crowd. The place is steeped in tradition. I love it there.”

Nats 09-7258Name: Kelsey Serwa
Canadian Ski Cross Team
Age: 19
Home town: Kelowna, BC
Current town: Whistler, BC
Team member since: 2008/09
World Ranking: 3rd
Sponsors: Pinnacle Sports Physiotherapy, Serwa Bulldozing, Gabel, Alpina, Atomic

Young, determined and focused on earning a place on the podium in 2010, Kelsey Serwa is one of the many athletes now in full training for the glory of the games. Serwa was raised in Kelowna and spent a lot of time on Big White in recent years, but says that wherever there is snow, she will ski. She’s been training hard all year and now it’s finally down to just a few more months before the Olympic spotlight comes to Vancouver and Whistler.

VancouverBC.com:
You’ve seen a lot of success in your short career. What has been your biggest achievement so far?

Kelsey Serwa: “I haven’t had any wins on the World Cup circuit but I have had my fair share of success, especially considering this has been my first year of racing Ski Cross. My greatest achievement so far was finishing second at the World Cup Finals in La Plagne, France, which moved me into third position for the overall World Cup standings.”

VBC: How do you balance training and competing with the rest of your life?

CSC 2008-8938KS: “Starting at a young age, I had to learn how to balance my academic and social life with my athletic responsibilities. While in high school, I had to complete most of my courses through self -schooling and correspondence. Instead of having a classroom with a teacher to guide the lessons, I had a bumpy van or a crowded hotel room to study out of.

During the competition season, I am fortunate enough to be able to dedicate all of my time to my sport to ensure that I perform at my optimum potential each race. During the off season, we have a little more freedom, and are able to live relatively normal lives. I balance physical training and work on the weekdays, leaving the weekends comparatively free. At the moment I am working part time at Whistler Mountain River Adventures booking rafting tours.”

VBC: Leading up to the 2010 Winter Games, what does your schedule look like in terms of preparing for the Games?

KS: “My preparation leading up to the Games began many years ago. Five days a week I work on conditioning my body in the gym and on the mountain to build both strength and endurance. We also have a couple of on-snow camps scheduled this summer to improve our skiing abilities and to work on different race strategies. We begin our competition season in late December or early January, and from there will have a total of seven races before the Games. These races are crucial for qualifying for the Games. I have also been doing some mental training as preparation for the upcoming race season.”

PGS_Quali_Alexa_Loo_CANIn 1988, Alexa Loo strapped a pair of old ski boots to a rental board and fell in love.

For years, however, Loo was too shy to compete, and it wasn’t until 1995 that she joined the Blackcomb snowboard club.  Loo’s first lesson entailed getting the right gear, and soon she was sporting new Burton race boots and a Burton Factory Prime board and plate bindings. It was then that Loo’s road to the Olympic Games began.

Weekends were dedicated to training at Blackcomb and weekdays were spent working full time at KPMG in Abbotsford. Two short years and matching knee scars later, Loo was taking winters off for full-time training and competing. It wasn’t easy.

“For a number of years it was quite a struggle trying to make enough money, find a coach and organize travel to Europe, the U.S. and Canada,” Loo says.

DSC_0051In 1997, Loo was in Colorado training with the US Pro team and working toward making the 1998 Olympic team. Soon after, she found herself on the Canadian Snowboard Federation. Loo hired a coach and trained with the national team. Fast forward to 2009—Loo is now looking forward to competing in her fifth World Championship and the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Loo sat down with Vancouver View Magazine to discuss the highs and lows of being one of the best snowboard racers in the world.

DSC_0100Vancouver View: What are some of the highlights from the past year of competition?

Alexa Loo: Most recently in Tremblant, Quebec, I successfully defended my title as Canadian National Champion for both the parallel slalom and the parallel GS events. In addition, I am now the North American Champion for both events! This was meaningful to me as the level of my teammates has increased tremendously.

VV: What is your training schedule going to be like as you prepare for the 2010 Winter Games?

Loo: We started on-snow training and board and equipment testing in early May, and that will be followed by fitness and strength training. We take eight weeks and hit the gym hard until mid-August, when we will chase the snow and get back in the gates. From September to December, we will be on snow every second week until the main start of the World Cup season in early December in Italy.

VV: What is your message to Vancouverites for 2010?

Loo: Embrace it and celebrate it! Go to some of the venues; go skating at the Oval during the public skate times. Buy some tickets to some events. When you have tickets, go online and find out about the Canadian athletes that will be competing at that event. Volunteer! Most importantly, wear red during the games to show the Canadian Athletes that you are supporting us. We will appreciate it and be inspired by your support!

CEva_Avila_jpeg1anadian songstress Eva Avila has been enjoying a steady stream of success this year. 2009 has seen her topping music charts and appearing on big stages all over the country—events which could very well become commonplace for this exciting local talent.

Since Avila first stepped into the spotlight in 2006, she has been steadily proving that dreams can become reality. Her debut album Somewhere Else grabbed the number six spot on the Canadian Album charts upon its release. It also generated three hit singles, including the double-platinum digital single “Meant to Fly,” which hit the number one spot on the Single Sales Charts and helped Avila land a 2007 JUNO nomination for New Artist of the Year.

And when the call to join Beyoncé on the Canadian leg of her tour came, 21 year-old Avila was more than ready. She sat down recently with VancouverBC.com for an exclusive one-on-one chat.

Michelle Branch).

VancouverBC.com: This has been an incredible year for you—you’ve toured with Beyoncé! Describe for us how you found out you would be joining her for some of her Canadian dates, and the feeling of being on stage.

Eva Avila: Well, I found out about this six days before the first show! My manager called me up and when he told me the news, I couldn’t believe it. I was filled with excitement and I was totally giddy. We were doing a short set of five songs, which we had already performed plenty of times, so we knew we were ready. However, being the opening act for an artist of that calibre brought on a lot of pressure. She is, without a doubt, one of the most successful female artists out there, and I felt so privileged to be able to share the stage with her. On the first night in Edmonton, I got the opportunity to meet her. She gave me a big hug and seemed delighted to meet me! Woah. The four shows went amazing. The rush of adrenaline I felt on that stage was like euphoria almost. It was so much fun to play in front of arenas filled with thousands of people. Traveling around the country with my band was a blast, too—we have so much fun together. We’re like a family, as clichéd as it sounds. After the last show in Vancouver, we all watched her show from beginning to end. She is a stellar performer; she carries herself with such poise and charisma. Her entire concert inspired all of my band, and especially me. She is definitely my new idol. It was an amazing week.

VBC: What are some of the other big moments you’ve had so far this year?

EA: Touring with Beyoncé was definitely the highlight of the year so far, and the Junos were lots of fun, too. I always feel very privileged to be attending these types of events. My show in my hometown was so special as well—that was another highlight.

VBC: As a young singer with an increasing fan base and fame, how have you dealt with the rise in popularity, and is there anything you wish wasn’t part of the job?

EA: It sounds weird when people call me a celebrity, because I really don’t consider myself one. It’s always very flattering when someone stops me on the street or in public places. It reminds me that I love my job and it’s great to be recognized for it. Makes me smile and warms my heart. I feel so blessed to be doing my dream job, but yes, there are times when it gets a little crazy. Whether it’s a photo or video shoot, an autograph signing or a media event, you sometimes feel like you should be in 45 places at once. Or when on tour, it can be very exhausting. Always waking up super early, going from hotel room to hotel room, all that traveling…it’s hard physically and mentally. But I’ve dreamed about this since I was a little girl, so I don’t allow myself to complain. I try my very best to cherish every single moment of it.

VBC: Songs like “Damned” are the kind that one can easily relate to, maybe laugh at. What is your best behind-the-song story?

EA: Last year I wrote over 40 songs. Some were autobiographical, but not all of them. On my last record, I co-wrote a song called “Run.” I took a lot from my past personal experience and wrote a story about moving on, leaving the rest behind, running to a better place, etc. It was a lot of fun to write; it came very naturally. I’m also a very big fan of the song “I’m Sorry”—also on the new record. I didn’t write it, but it sounds like I did. The vulnerability and the honesty in that song is very me. I love that one a lot.

VBC: What’s next for Eva?

EA: Touring, doing some festivals and the Calgary Stampede and this winter I will be in Ross Petty’s Robin Hood musical. I am so excited about that. I did a lot of musical theatre when I was younger and I’ve been dying to get back into that. Hopefully it’ll open some doors for me in the acting world. The next step in 2010 will most likely be working on a French album.
