I first met local actress Sonya Salomaa seven years ago, and I knew then that she was a star in the making. She has recently joined the cast of the Canadian hit series The Guard. Sonya stars as ambitious engineer and First Mate Laura Nelson. The second season of this 13-part, one-hour action series is shot in the scenic wilderness of Squamish, British Columbia. The Guard follows the high-action drama of a skilled crew of rescue workers as they face the dangers of the Pacific Northwest while searching for the meaning in their own lives. Sonya describes her character as “very Type A, very by-the-book. It’s very important to her to have rules and to stick to them and, because of that, she sometimes comes across as a little uptight.” Check it out Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on Global.

This busy actress will also be returning as Traci Prager for the second season of Global Television’s popular drama Durham County. A 2008 Leo Award winner and Gemini nominee, her work on the show has definitely not gone unnoticed.

For such a short time in the acting world, Sonya has some impressive credits on her resume. She has landed recurring and lead roles on series such as Dark Angel, The L Word, Stargate SG-1, Andromeda, Dead Like Me, Glory Days, and Flash Gordon. Also, she has numerous movies of the week and feature films under her belt, like Thralls, House of the Dead, The Ties that Bind, Fatal Reunion and the much-anticipated upcoming release Watchmen.

Sonya is married to actor Warren Christie. They split their time living in both Vancouver and Los Angeles. The couple is expecting their first child.
